Named after the cult US novelist, Harry Crews was a short-lived project featuring Lydia Lunch (vocals), Kim Gordon (bass, vocals), concurrently of Sonic Youth, and Sadie Mae (drums). In 1988 the group undertook a tour of the UK and Europe, parts of which were preserved on Naked In Garden Hills, initially released on Lunch’s own Widowspeak label. The album owes much to Lunch’s confrontational style, although the tempo is markedly more upbeat than most of her work. Its content is largely inspired by Crews’ writings, notably ‘Knockout Artist’, the title of one of his novels. However, the album does include a virulent version of Sonic Youth’s ‘(She’s In A) Bad Mood’. Harry Crews split up in 1988 when the tour was complete.
