The R&B group Guy pioneered the “new jack swing” movement of the late ’80s and early ’90s, mixing traditional soul vocals with hip-hop beats.
• New York City singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Teddy Riley formed the group in 1987 with childhood friend Tommy Gatling and Aaron Hall.
• Guy’s 1988 self-titled debut album topped the R&B chart and has since gone double platinum.
• After scoring another No. 1 R&B album with their 1990 sophomore effort, The Future, the group disbanded. Riley produced hits for other artists—including Michael Jackson—and formed Blackstreet, best known for their 1996 No. 1 smash “No Diggity.”
• The group reformed and released Guy III in 2000.
