With their gritty East Coast lyricism and boom-bap beats, the Buffalo rap crew Griselda puts a new spin on classic ’90s drug rap.
• Griselda members Conway the Machine and Westside Gunn are brothers; Benny the Butcher is their younger cousin. In high school, the three formed a rap group called The Forerunners with Benny's older brother, Machine Gun Black, who was killed in 2006.
• The members of Griselda spent their early careers cementing their places in the underground East Coast hip-hop scene.
• In 2012, Conway was shot and partially paralyzed, which rendered him temporarily unable to perform. Though Westside had previously stepped back from rapping, he jumped in to pick up where Conway had left off.
• Westside launched the Griselda label in 2014. The label began aggressively releasing projects, gaining the interest of rap veteran Eminem.
• Two years after Griselda Records inked a deal with Eminem’s Shady Records, the Griselda crew finally released their debut album, 2019’s critically acclaimed WWCD.
