Australian songwriter Gordi seamlessly blends warm, intimate folk with blissful electronic palettes, creating her own soft and singular space. Born Sophie Payten in the small town of Canowindra in New South Wales in 1992, Gordi threw her energy behind writing and recording when she moved to Sydney for school. Her debut album, 2017’s Reservoir, established her as an artist capable of grand, transportive moments, swimming in a folktronica stream akin to Bon Iver’s on songs like “Heaven I Know,” a sweeping, piano-led heartbreaker. Between touring Reservoir and finishing her final medical exams, she wound up having a panic attack in the bathroom on an international flight. Immortalized in the pared-down ballad “Aeroplane Bathroom,” that moment of anxiety catalyzes her 2020 sophomore record, Our Two Skins, a fearless and aching collection of powerful, lushly textured pop that explores, among other things, her blossoming queer identity and the pain of losing her grandmother.
