One of modern jazz’s leading composers, George Russell started out as a drummer with Benny Carter, but first came to prominence in the mid-1940s writing for Dizzy Gillespie. His book, THE LYDIAN CHROMATIC CONCEPT OF TONAL ORGANIZATION, published in 1953, was a crucial influence on the modal jazz of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. In the early '60s he led a sextet and made several celebrated recordings, then relocated to Sweden, experimenting with electronic music and collaborating with Jan Garbarek and Terje Rypdal. One of the first artists signed to the reactivated Blue Note Records, in the mid-to-late '80s he toured the U.K. with bands that included Chris Biscoe, Ian Carr, Andy Sheppard, and Kenny Wheeler.
