Similar in style to Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span, the founding members of Fungus -- Fred Piek (guitar, vocals), Sido Martens (guitars), Kees Maat (piano), and Koos Pakvis (bass) -- were joined later by Louis Debij (drums). They mixed Dutch and British material, although Lief Ende Leid, their finest album, is devoted to the traditional music of their homeland -- a thorough exercise in folk-rock. After Martens had left to pursue a solo career, he released Land and Water, and developed a style similar to Richard Thompson. In 1977, Fungus released the impressive, ironically titled Mushrooms, devoted to English songs and tunes. The following year, Debij and lead guitarist Arie Graff departed, leaving the remaining trio of Piek, Pakvis, and Rens van der Zalm to recorded their final album acoustically, before disbanding in 1980. Fungus are regarded as having served as an example to other Dutch musicians on the local folk scene, and a small group of bands followed in their footsteps. Piek went on to a solo career, while the remainder of Fungus' personnel formed a comedy band, the Amazing Stroopwafels. A Fungus reunion took place in October 1984. ~ TiVo Staff
