About Frances Quinlan
Artist Biography
Philly's Frances Quinlan is best known as frontwoman of the acclaimed indie rock band Hop Along, which she originally started as a solo project. In 2020, she released her debut, Likewise, under her own name.
Born in Manhattan but brought up in Philadelphia, Quinlan initially took oil painting classes before getting into music. Largely inspired by acts like Ani DiFranco, Patty Griffin, Fiona Apple, and Bright Eyes, she also maintained a looser interest in metal acts to which she was introduced by her elder brother Mark. While still a senior in high school, she began writing and performing solo acoustic indie folk music under the name Hop Along, Queen Ansleis, releasing her debut album under that moniker, Freshman Year, in 2005. She performed as Hop Along, Queen Ansleis for several years before recruiting her brother on drums, bassist Tyler Long, and guitarist Joe Reinhart to turn the project into a full band. For the group's first album, 2012's Get Disowned, they shortened the name to Hop Along. Quinlan's incisive, thoughtful lyricism earned the band a devoted fan base, and they signed to Saddle Creek for the albums Painted Shut (2015) and Bark Your Head Off, Dog (2018). Wanting to explore music that didn't fit with the sound of the band, Quinlan decided to record a solo album. 2020's Likewise saw her augmenting her usual guitar-based sound with synths, harps, strings, and programmed beats; produced by Quinlan and Reinhart, it was recorded at his studio, The Headroom. ~ John D.
