Led by singer Dawn McCarthy and spouse/musical collaborator Nils Frykdahl, Faun Fables is an avant folk band. Their music melds American folk traditions from the 18th through 20th centuries with historical sounds from the British Isles, Western Europe, and Poland, art rock, art song, cabaret, and improvisation. Their first outing was 2001's Mother Twilight. They toured the U.S. for a several years and issued Family Album in 2004. Their popularity continued to grow, especially with the release of 2006's conceptual/ theatrical offering Transit Rider. Light of a Vaster Dark appeared in 2010. 2016's Born of the Sun showcased songs with themes of children and family, natural living and travel. The pair toured occasionally with various friends accompanying them. Faun Fables spent the next nine years devoting themselves to childrearing, growing food, travel and living close to the land. They returned to recording in 2025 with Counterclockwise, an album filled with songs about their growing family (with the kids participating), environmentalism, and mysticism.
