Pop singer Eric Carmen transitioned from the lead singer of ’70s power-pop group The Raspberries to a solo artist known for soaring soft-rock ballads including “All By Myself” and “Hungry Eyes.”
• Carmen was a founding member of The Raspberries, which formed in 1970. The group released four albums between 1972 and 1974 and notched a No. 5 single in 1972 with “Go All the Way” before splitting early in 1975.
• Carmen released a self-titled solo LP later in 1975. The first single, “All by Myself,” had a musical structure based on a piano concerto by Sergei Rachmaninoff and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1996, pop juggernaut Celine Diot released a cover that reached No. 4 in the US.
• The follow-up single, “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again,” reached No. 11—Carmen’s highest chart position for a decade.
• He returned to the Top 10 in 1987 with “Hungry Eyes,” which appeared on the soundtrack to the hit film Dirty Dancing. The song reached No. 4.
• Carmen’s 1988 single “Make Me Lose Control” hit No. 3 on the pop chart. The same year, his song “Reason to Try” appeared on the compilation 1988 Summer Olympics Album: One Moment in Time, in conjunction with the Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
• In 2000, Carmen released I Was Born to Love You, his first album of new material since his self-titled 1984 LP. The album first came out in 1998 in Japan, where it was titled Winter Dreams. Former Raspberries bandmate Wally Bryson played guitar on two tracks.
• Carmen reunited with the other original Raspberries in 2004. This resulted in the 2007 concert album Live on the Sunset Strip and 2017’s Pop Art Live, a recording of the band’s first Cleveland reunion show in 2004.
• Carmen recorded the 2013 single “Brand New Year”—his first new solo recording in almost 15 years—to help promote the best-of compilation The Essential Eric Carmen.
Eric Carmen has also released music as a member of The Raspberries, Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band The Cyrus Erie.
