Formed in 2004, regional Mexican outfit Enigma Norteño is best known for their controversial narcocorridos, which tell stories (real and imagined) inspired by the international drug trade.
∙ Stateside success came with the 2009 album Corridos de Altura and the hit single “El Ondeado (M1),” the band’s first song to hit the Billboard charts.
∙ Juego Prohibido, from 2010, included one of their biggest hits and signature songs, the tender love ballad “Aunque Sea en Silencio (Cuatro Paredes).”
∙ With radio often refusing to play their narcocorridos, Enigma Norteño has increasingly turned to the internet, where their videos have garnered hundreds of millions of views.
∙ Many of the band’s hits are romantic in nature, including their biggest chart success, the 2014 accordeon-fueled romp “Calla y Me Besas.”
∙ Unafraid of courting controversy, in 2015 they released “El Chapo Guzmán,” which was inspired by the infamous Mexican drug lord.
Members of Enigma Norteño include, or have included, Ernesto Barajas and Humberto Pérez.
