In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail.
Empanadas Ilegales is Vancouver’s psychedelic cumbia and salsa band, fusing Latin rhythms with surf rock, free jazz, and psychedelia. Formed in 2017 by friends from Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, and Canada, they ignite dance floors with every show. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular?
Abelardo Carbono, El Maravilloso Mundo de Abelardo Carbono
Chocolate en Sexteto, Chocolate en Sexteto
Los Piranas, Toma Tu Jabón Kapax
We picked these albums because they each push boundaries while staying true to Latin roots. Carbono’s raw psych guitar, Los Pirañas’ wild experimentation, and Armenteros’ classic salsa all inspire the sound and energy we bring as Empanadas Ilegales. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song.
“Chancletazo”
We picked “Chancletazo” because it’s raw and full of energy. With psychedelic guitars, punchy percussion, and horns, it captures the power of a mother’s flip-flop slap. It’s a fusion of cumbia, experimental sounds, and trance that keeps you moving. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?
One of our most memorable moments was playing the legendary Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, opening for The Cat Empire—an unforgettable night. We’ve also rocked the Vancouver and Montreal Jazz Fests, bringing psychedelic cumbia to new heights! Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band?
Playing KEXP and Tiny Desk are huge dreams for us—two iconic stages where we can share our sound with the world. We’re also excited to bring our live shows back to South America, reconnecting with our roots and the incredible energy of our fans there
