Ethiopian pianist Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou's music was a largely private practice for most of her life, her weightless, spiritually guided compositions being shared minimally while she lived quietly as a nun. Though she was writing, recording, and periodically releasing music as early as 1963, her songs wouldn't reach a larger audience until older tracks began trickling out in 2006 with appearances on a volume of the Éthiopiques series and other world music compilations. Mississippi Records started releasing Guèbrou's archival recordings in 2016 with a self-titled compilation, and the label shared more of her albums over the next several years, among them 2024's Souvenirs. Guèbrou died in 2023 at the age of 99.
