With their intricate melodies, unexpected time signatures, and Duncan Wallis' yelping vocals, Dutch Uncles bring an arty twist to their fusion of indie and electro-pop. Drawing inspiration from influences as eclectic as Steve Reich and XTC, the band began as part of a wave of late-2000s Manchester-area acts proving that there was more to the city's music scene than laddish rock bands like Oasis. They did just that with their self-titled 2008 debut album, which spanned post-punk, indie disco, and Baroque pop and established their ambitions. Later, Dutch Uncles expanded and refined their style from album to album, emphasizing their chamber pop leanings on 2013's Out of Touch, In the Wild and returning to gritty rock on 2017's politically charged Big Balloon. When they returned with the deceptively smooth synth pop of 2023's True Entertainment, their drive to push things forward was as strong as ever.
