With her dulcet vocals, unique melodic shifts, and lyrical vulnerability, Dorothea Paas recalls the early work of fellow Canadian Joni Mitchell, although her sonic temperament speaks of an allegiance to experimental art rock. During the ten-year buildup to her debut, she loaned her talents as a singer and guitarist to acts like Jennifer Castle and U.S. Girls while quietly refining her own material on a series of self-released cassettes. By the time Paas crafted 2021’s Anything Can't Happen, she'd not only won the admiration of her peers but amassed the maturity and depth of a far more seasoned artist. Her 2024 follow-up, the floatier and more jazz-inflected Think of Mist, was at least as artful, with Paas having written arrangements for Badge Époque Ensemble and others in the interim.
