About DJ Ganyani
Artist Biography
DJ Ganyani is one of South Africa’s most legendary house-music producers and DJs. Born Fredericks Ganyani Tshabalala in Soweto in 1969, Ganyani has been heavily involved in the scene since the ’90s. Affectionately known as Master G, Ganyani began his journey to godfather status when he was selling cassette tapes at taxi ranks and DJing at local taverns. After putting out his debut compilation in the late ‘90s, Ganyani’s countrywide acclaim came in 2001 when the national broadcaster SABC1 commissioned him for two volumes of its Simunye House Grooves compilation. After the success of those projects, Ganyani went on to release his own Ganyani’s House Grooves album series. Featuring classic soulful tunes like “Be There” and “Emazulwini,” these records became integral parts of the nation's dance music soundscape. Alongside names such as OSKIDO, DJ Fresh, and Vinny Da Vinci, Ganyani has spearheaded and helped drive the growth of house music in South Africa.
