South African brothers Die Campbells have churned out an eclectic catalog of sounds, touching on country, old-school rock ‘n’ roll, and dance pop. Born almost exactly two years apart in the late ‘70s in Cape Town, Harry and Tony Campbell got a musical education from their father in their English- and Afrikaans-speaking household. After years of playing in bands while in school, the pair became an official duo in 1995. Their 2001 debut, You’re My Mate, displayed their varied range, offering country covers paired with island grooves (“How Do You Like Me Now”) and songs (like the title track) that mixed folky songwriting with driving, upbeat rhythms. Their 2004 album, Daar’s Iets Innie Water, notched them a massive hit with the bagpipes-powered “Bietjie Bietjie Lam,” and in 2009 they joined forces with South African steakhouse chain Spur to deliver the hoedown-ready “Hillbilly Rock,” a fiddle-kissed tune tailor-made for line dancing.
