In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail.
One of my earliest musical memories was when I was 9 years old, having studied the organ for a little over a year, my mother brought home the record “Jimmy Smith Plays The Standards”.
From that point on, I was permanently hooked on Jazz! What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular?
Billy Higgins, Cedar Walton, George Coleman, Sam Jones, Eastern Rebellion
McCoy Tyner, The Real McCoy
Miles Davis, 'Round About Midnight (Legacy Edition)
The playing on each of these albums is stellar, not only by the leaders, but by the sidemen as well.
I think together, these recordings could represent more or less a guide to playing modern Jazz. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song.
“When I Fell for You”
I enjoy writing ballads that make people feel an emotion.
It’s challenging to be original with so many beautiful songs out there, but this one seems to have just the right amount special moments. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?
Quite a number of years ago, I was playing with Jon Hendricks in a New York City club called Lush Life.
Johnny Hartman was in the audience and was asked to sing a tune with us.
So I played Lush Life with Johnny Hartman at Lush Life! Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band?
I would very much like to record a solo piano CD on a beautiful Steinway D.
I would also like to write and record a CD with my trio and a symphony orchestra.
