Irish singer/songwriter Damien Rice grew up in the countryside of County Kildare. He put a band together (heavy, indie rock outfit Juniper) in 1997, and the the group quickly signed with Polygram. They issued two singles, "The World Is Dead" and "Weathermen," and both did moderately well on Irish radio. When it came time to record a full-length, the label prevented Juniper from doing so, and Rice split. He returned to Dublin to record a demo, and it caught the attention of producer David Arnold, who set Rice up in his studio. His first single, "The Blower's Daughter," was an instant Top 20 hit when it appeared in fall 2001. ~ MacKenzie Wilson
