Malayalam rapper, singer and composer Dabzee exemplifies how great things can emerge from difficult situations. Born in the town of Changaramkulam in 1991, the artist aka Mohammed Fazil had to return to Kerala after losing his job in Dubai during the pandemic. The MC had made a few unreleased songs while in the Gulf, but wrote and recorded over a dozen tracks when the world was locked down. One of those tunes, “Manavaalan Thug”, was heard by the team behind the action-comedy Thallumaala (2022), who used it as a promotional theme. Both the film and song were hits, and Dabzee suddenly became a name to reckon with in the burgeoning Malayalam hip-hop scene. Since then Dabzee, whose work incorporates the sounds and slang of the folk and traditional music of his home state and the Malabar region of south India, has enjoyed success after success. Following his initial output was with his conscious rap collective Manushyar (with whom he’s scored such smashes as 2023’s “Malabar Banger”), the artist has been winning new fans with a series of soundtrack contributions and self-released material. Among the landmark moments of his career so far are signing to the India division of Nas-founded label Mass Appeal and connecting with two of his idols, electronic music producer KSHMR—on whose 2023 album Karam Dabzee features—and Sushin Shyam, the film composer and member of metal band The Down Troddence, whose “Illuminati” from 2024 blockbuster film Aavesham gave Dabzee his biggest hit to date.
