Crown Heights Affair artfully bridged the gap between funk and disco and released horn-powered singles that have translated across generations of dancers while taking on new life via sampling by hip-hop producers. From 1974 through 1989, the Brooklyn band released 12 singles that charted in the U.S. They topped the Billboard disco chart with their second one, "Dreaming a Dream," the dashing title song from their sophomore album, and soon returned to the chart's upper reaches with "Every Beat of My Heart" and "Dancin'." At the turn of the '80s, they scored a Top Ten pop hit in the U.K. with "You Gave Me Love," which showcased them as more of a vocal group, and they continued to polish their sound in disco's wake with a run of additional singles that closed out with "I'll Do Anything," an affirmation of their role in the development of house music.
