Canadian pop-rock singer and songwriter Corey Hart broke out in the mid-’80s with synth-tinged hits like “Sunglasses at Night.”
• Hart began singing as a kid and auditioned for Tom Jones at the age of 11. Jones introduced him to legendary Canadian songwriter Paul Anka, with whom Hart recorded.
• In 1980, Hart represented Canada at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo.
• His 1983 debut album, First Offense, includes the smash single “Sunglasses at Night,” which peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, earning Hart international fame. The follow-up single, “It Ain’t Enough,” went Top 20 in the US and Top 5 in Canada.
• On the strength of singles like “Never Surrender”—a No. 1 hit in Canada—Hart’s 1985 sophomore LP, Boy in the Box, proved an even bigger success, going platinum in the US and diamond in Canada.
• Hart’s third album, 1986’s Fields of Fire, features a cover of “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” popularized by Elvis Presley in 1961. Hart’s version reached No. 1 in Canada and became his seventh Top 40 hit in America.
• Although Hart’s US hits dried up in the ’90s, he continued making the charts in his home country. After a long hiatus to raise his family, he returned with the 2014 album Ten Thousand Horses, followed by the EP Dreaming Time Again in 2019.
