Miami, Florida's Coke was a garage band whose sound was a hybrid of Latin soul and boogaloo, funk, psychedelia and rock & roll. Their lone eponymous album is a period classic sampled by producers and DJs for more than three decades. Originally called "Instant Garage Band," the quintet -- Paul Garcia, guitar; Ariel Hernandez, bass; Jose Rubio, organ; Ruben Perez, drums; Peter Fernandez, vocals -- played local gigs with a pair of hired trumpeters. They signed a record deal with Manuel J. Mato's Sound Triangle label. Upon release, the eponymous album sold more than 10,000 copies across south Florida. It charted elsewhere in the US and earned unwelcome attention from the beverage company, who ordered them to cease and desist using the name. The following year they changed their name to Opus and re-released the date. They issued one more studio offering in 1974 titled Opus Opus.
Members of Coke include, or have included, Peter Fernandez.
