About Chuck D
Hometown
Queens, NY, United States
Born
August 1, 1960
Genre
Hip-Hop/Rap
As the founder of Public Enemy, Chuck D is one of the most colossal figures in the history of hip-hop, not to mention its most respected intellectual. He redefined hip-hop as music with a message, and his strident radicalism ushered in an era when rap was closely scrutinized for its content. A decade into his career, the rapper made his solo debut with the 1996 full-length Autobiography of Mistachuck, which found him rhyming over more streamlined funk rhythms than the densely packed collages of his work with PE. While the group remained active, Chuck formed other projects such as the Impossebulls and rap-rock supergroup Prophets of Rage, and released material through independent labels. He revisited busy, Bomb Squad-esque production with his Def Jam-issued 2025 solo album Radio Armageddon.
Chuck D has also released music as a member of Prophets of Rage, Enemy Radio, Fine Arts Militia, Public Enemy, The Impossebulls, and Confrontation Camp.
