A longtime member of the pioneering German electronic unit Tangerine Dream, Christopher Franke was born on April 6, 1953, in Berlin. He studied classical music at the Berlin Conservatory, then joined the jazz-rock group Agitation Free and, with Swiss avant-garde composer Thomas Kessler, helped establish the Berlin School of Electronic Music. Franke joined Tangerine Dream in 1970, contributing to the landmark albums Zeit, Atem, and Phaedra, and film soundtracks such as Sorcerer and Risky Business. He innovatively used sequencers as percussion instruments, shaping Tangerine Dream's signature sound. Franke left the group in 1988 to pursue a solo career, moving to Los Angeles in 1990.
