About Chelsea Carmichael
Artist Biography
Chelsea Carmichael is a Manchester-born saxophonist, arranger, and composer based in South East London. An integral part of the U.K.'s modern jazz scene, she is a member of Theon Cross' and Courtney Pine's touring bands. She also tours with Joe Armon-Jones and Neue Grafik Ensemble. An educator who served as Musical Director of the NYJO Jazz Messengers, she is a graduate of the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Carmichael is an original member of the SEED Ensemble and played on Driftglass, their Mercury Music Prize-nominated debut, in 2019. She also leads the Chelsea Carmichael Ensemble. She was the first artist signed to saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings' Native Rebel label, which released her 2021 debut album The River Doesn't Like Strangers.
