Artist Biography
Although they started out as solo artists, reggae duo Chaka Demus & Pliers had their greatest successes after teaming up in the early ’90s.
∙ They are the first Jamaican act to land three consecutive Top 5 hits on the UK Singles chart.
∙ Iconic Jamaican production team Sly & Robbie were early fans of Chaka Demus & Pliers, coproducing 1993’s Tease Me and 1996’s For Every Kinda People.
∙ In 1997, the duo kicked off the star-studded album Reggatta Mondatta: A Reggae Tribute to The Police with their cover of “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.”
∙ They performed at the 2007 American Music Awards when Alicia Keys turned her live reggae remix of “No One” into a dancehall medley that also featured Beenie Man and Junior Reid.
∙ Their hit “Murder She Wrote” has been sampled by such artists as Pitbull (“El Taxi”), Black Eyed Peas (“RITMO [Bad Boys for Life] [Remix]”), and French Montana (“Freaks”).
