With a lush, jangly sound that combined attitude with highly melodic hooklines, Welsh band Catatonia scored a spate of hits in the U.K. in the '90s, while earning a strong college radio following in the U.S. While their 1996 debut album WAY BEYOND BLUE and its catchy single "You've Got a Lot to Answer For," stoked a sense of excitement about the band, it was the follow-up, INTERNATIONAL VELVET, in 1998 which propelled them to superstardom, if only briefly. The album spawned a pair of U.K. top tens in the X-FILES referencing "Mulder and Scully," and the anthemic "Road Rage," the latter getting some attention from MTV. Later albums earned critical praise, but never matched the success.
