Formed as an offshoot of the seven-piece Vivendo de Pao, San Francisco-based Boca Do Rio (the name is Portuguese for "mouth of the river") mixes jazz improvisation with Brazilian roots music, neatly combining two musical cultures in seamless integration. Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Kevin Welch is the leader of both ensembles. Welch had an extended stay in Brazil in the early '90s and found himself fascinated and immersed in the samba music of the region, and returning to California, he formed the samba-infused Vivendo de Pao, which spun off into Boca Do Rio. The group includes Welch (under his stage name Gogo) on guitar and lead vocals, Jacob Elijah Aginsky (who also plays in the Bay area group Subnautic) on piano, Larry De La Cruz on saxophone, Jon Evans on bass, Dan Foltz on drums, and backing vocalist Tika Morgan and percussionist Alex Calatayud. The group released the self-titled Boca Do Rio on Welch's own Vagabundo Records in 2006. ~ Steve Leggett
