San Francisco-based Bob Hillman is a quirky folk-rocker with a dry sense of humor and a knack for witty, clever lyrics. The obscure but talented singer/songwriter moved to New York in 1994. By day, Hillman earned his living helping prepare high school students for the SAT and other standardized tests, and at night, he performed in the clubs of Manhattan. Hillman had been playing Manhattan's singer/songwriter circuit for several years when he caught the attention of producer Tommy West, formerly of Cashman & West -- a '60s/'70s duo known for its work with Jim Croce, the Partridge Family, and Spanky & Our Gang, among others. In 1999, West produced Hillman's debut album, Playing God, for Sliced Bread, a small indie label based in the Philadelphia suburb of Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. After moving to Brave New Records' Morada label in 2002, Hillman released Welcome to My Century. The following year saw him put his music career on hold and attend business school, and the next decade was spent raising his sons and working as a successful marketer. A layoff in 2014, in addition to reconnecting with old friend and fellow tunesmith Peter Case, served as the impetus to get back into the studio. Produced by Case and featuring guest work from Joseph Arthur, the crowd-funded Lost Soul was issued in 2015. ~ Alex Henderson
