About Bob Brady & The Con Chords

Hometown
Baltimore, MD, United States
Born
1965
Genre
Pop
Best known for the infectious Northern soul classic "Everybody's Going to the Love-In," blue-eyed soul combo Bob Brady & the Con Chords formed in Baltimore in 1964. The original lineup of the Con Chords did not actually feature Brady; the group was instead fronted by George Layfield, who was backed by guitarist Dennis Zwirlein, bassist Vince Sansone, keyboardist Jim Samuel, trumpeter Lou Patti, saxophonist Dave Wladkowski, and drummer John Drexler. A former regular on the legendary Baltimore teen dance broadcast The Buddy Deane Show who boasted an uncanny vocal similarity to Smokey Robinson, Brady signed on in early 1965, at which time Layfield mostly receded to backing vocal duties. The following year, the group added trombonist Larry Sprigg and replaced Patti with multi-instrumentalist Tony Constantino prior to cutting its debut single, the Chariot label release "Goodbye Baby," which proved minor hit in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area. "More, More, More of Your Love" followed in 1967, and by this time Bob Brady & the Con Chords were one of the region's most popular live acts, opening for the likes of the Beach Boys, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and Martha & the Vandellas. After issuing a third single, "I Love You Baby," the group sacked Sansone and Drexler, adding bassist Tommy Thompson and drummer Marty Fisher in time to cut 1968's "Everybody's Going to the Love-In," a record eventually embraced by the DJs and dancers populating Britain's Northern soul club scene. (Decades later, it even appeared in a British commercial for fast-food chain KFC.) Bob Brady & the Con Chords did not resurface on vinyl for over a year, releasing "It's Love." "Savin' All My Love for You" would prove their swan song, although through circumstances unknown their original recording of "More, More, More of Your Love" was reissued by A&M in 1972. By that time the group was no more, having played its final show on December 29, 1970. Several members later reunited in the group PennLucy, while Brady went on to work for music consulting firm A.I.R. ~ Jason Ankeny
