A founding member of avant-rockers Sun City Girls, guitarist Sir Richard Bishop is a global sound explorer whose unique blend of ethno-folk, raga droning, and gypsy-inspired picking has placed him at the vanguard of guitar experimentation. Taking up the mantle of the American Primitivist movement, Bishop’s solo debut arrived in 1998, appropriately, on John Fahey’s Revenant label. Invoking past masters of outward-bound finger-picked technique such as Fahey and Robbie Basho, Bishop works primarily in many contexts but is best known for his solo guitar records. Rendering whole soundscapes through studio magic, his imaginative compositions juxtapose deft, exploratory improvisations against a backdrop of overdubbed piano, harmonium, and percussive acoustic flourishes. ~ Dave Shim
