As the 1990s saw the American indie rock underground go topside, many trailblazers, sadly, were left in history's dustbin. Such a fate befell Big Dipper after two full albums on prolific indie label Homestead and one on major label Epic. The band was formed in the mid-'80s from the remnants of Boston-based rockers the Volcano Suns, when guitarist/vocalist Gary Waleik and bassist/vocalist Steve Michener joined guitarist Bill Goffrier and drummer Jeff Oliphant to make melodic punk with idiosyncratic lyrics. “Faith Healer” became a minor hit, thrusting Big Dipper onto a major label, which ironically led to their demise. Iconic indie label Merge records released a compilation in 2008, resulting in a few ecstatically received reunion shows.
Members of Big Dipper include, or have included, Bill Goffrier.
