For decades, the norteño outfit Banda Machos has repeatedly topped the charts in the US and Mexico with their combo of cumbia, banda, and ranchera music.
∙ Formed in 1990, the band broke through two years later with Casimira and Con Sangre de Indios, both of which hit the Top 5 of Billboard’s Regional Mexican Albums chart.
∙ In 1993, Banda Machos were named Best New Regional Mexican Artist at Lo Nuestro Awards, and the group has since been nominated twice for Banda Artist of the Year.
∙ Throughout the ’90s, they were closely affiliated with the rise of quedabrita, an acrobatic Mexican dance style, and several of their songs became quedabrita anthems.
∙ A Billboard staple, Banda Machos have charted dozens of times, but nothing matches 1994’s upbeat LP Gracias Mujer, which peaked at No. 2 on the Regional Mexican Albums chart.
∙ The group’s brass-filled 2006 LP, 20 Mil Heridas, received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Banda Album.
Members of Banda Machos include, or have included, Raul Ortega and Julio Cesar Guerrero.
