Banda de Turistas are an Argentinian indie rock band. Their sound combines psych, 21st century Rock en Español, and electronica into their own brand of hooky, noisy pop. They were formed in 2006 from the ashes of two other groups: an instrumental, ambient, Kraut-and-space rock outfit called Berlin and the other Palmeta, a band who wrote and played only pop songs. Their personnel -- Bruno Albano (bass and vocals) and Tomás Putruele (guitar and vocals), drummer Guido Colzani, keyboardist Patricio Troncoso, and Luis Balcarce on guitar -- all met while in school, and were either 19 and 20 when the band came together. They began making music together without a desire for a recording contract. They preferred to release their songs through the internet -- as evidenced by their 2007 five-track, lo-fi, spaced-out instrumental EP Cóctel de Instantáneo for the digital download label Mamushka Dogs Records. They began posting other songs and images on MySpace, where Jarvis Cocker discovered them; he requested they open for him on his 2008 tour of Argentina. These large-venue live shows were among the first Banda de Turistas played, and the gigs created an opportunity they never anticipated: They were offered a spot on a cross-country tour, playing middle size venues as well as festivals, where they caught the attention of Rolling Stone Argentina, who championed them to the nation with a long feature story. Their 2008 debut album, Mágico Corazón Radiofónico, for the independent Estamos Felices label, was produced and mixed by Mario Caldato, Jr. (Beastie Boys) -- via the internet from his studio in Los Angeles -- and was also covered by RS as the lead in their review section. All the while, the band was stretching out not only on MySpace but across YouTube, as well, issuing videos shot for little money that gained tens of thousands of views. Their second album, El Retorno (and their first for on PopArt), was sent (again via the internet) for mixing and mastering to Abbey Road Studios. The Argentine rock press made the band buzzworthy and word spread to surrounding Latin American countries. The almost constant flow of music and videos to the web creates a global fan base for Banda de Turistas. In 2010, they toured the Americas -- including Mexico, where they become wildly popular, and the United States, including a SXSW showcase. That fall they were nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards including best new artist. Nacional licensed their first two albums, issuing them as a compilation titled Magical Radiophonic Heart. In 2011, the band toured Mexico again, playing some of its largest festival crowds yet, and returned to South America to play select countries. They re-entered the studio to record YA, co-produced by Diego Tuñon and Diego Uma (Babasónicos), which was released in early 2012. The band's videos are garnered hundreds of thousands to millions of views on YouTube and their concert dates are almost always sellouts. They toured almost non-stop. They played the first Jóvenes Ilustres Festival in Mexico as part of an international cast of musicians. They finally got to perform in Europe via Spain, where they headlined their own shows and played a series of festivals. At the end of 2013, the group issued the pre-release single "Química." It reaches the top of the Argentinian charts and remained there for ten weeks. When the full-length Lo Que Más Querés was issued in May -- the band's fourth studio album co-produced by Tuta Torres and Juanchi Baleirón -- it headed straight to number one. For Banda de Turistas, there was only one response: Hit the road, first across the interior of Argentina, then South America. Taking the first real break in their career in 2016, the band re-entered the studio to begin laying down tracks. Again working with Caldato Jr. they delivered Mancho in late 2017, whose streams, sales, and videos completely outperformed the rest of their catalog. ~ Thom Jurek
