In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. It was the summer of 1983. My family drove from our native Nebraska to our new home in California. The radio was always on and "Every Breath You Take" must have played 30 times. I wanted to know how that song was made, and I wanted to make my own.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Paul Simon, Graceland The Police, Synchronicity (Remastered 2003) U2, The Unforgettable Fire These three albums move me as much today as they did when I first heard them. Each is a masterclass in musicianship, sonics, atmospherics and, importantly, lyrics.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Evensong” This song has always packed an emotional punch for me. I wrote it to honor my best friend who lost his brother to suicide. The line "I don't know why the leaves divorce the trees" conveys the ceaseless, bewildering feelings of loss we all experience.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Making music has burned some beautiful memories in my brain: the first live show with my band The August Madness; the first time I heard one of my tunes on the radio, in Brazil of all places; the first time my nephew sang one of my songs back to me.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? My musical bucket list is exceedingly simple: I want to keep making music and writing lyrics as long as I am drawing breath. Someone much smarter than me said that life without music would be a mistake. Truer words were never spoken.
