One of several elderly Mississippi hill country blues musicians plucked from obscurity by the Fat Possum label in the 1990s, Asie Payton was a farmer and musician who recorded two albums (one of which was performed live at Junior Kimbrough's juke joint) of raw delta blues for the label prior to his death in 1997. A relentleslly provincial artist, the singer/guitarist never toured and rarely strayed outside of the environs of his Holly Springs home. His music is marked by its rustic tenor and stripped-down, unadorned style; however, Payton's most well-known song is, ironically enough, an amped-up, dance-floor-ready remix of his solo tune "I Love You."
