Born

Genre
R&B/Soul
A soulful vocalist and songwriter, Arika Kane makes dance- and R&B-influenced pop. She initially grabbed attention with her 2009 debut, Arika Kane, which spawned several singles that were featured on VH-1's Love & Hip Hop. More television placements followed, including her song "Make It," being used as the theme song for the VH1 show Hollywood Exes in 2012. Along with industry attention, she has toured with Babyface, Charlie Wilson, Frankie Beverly, and others. In 2014, she collaborated with Brian McKnight on the song "It's There," off her album Thru the Veil. Born in Killingly, Connecticut, Kane grew up in a creative household with parents who both played music. She first began singing around age ten, and was involved in choir throughout her school years. Along the way, she began writing her own songs, drawing inspiration from artists like Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Judy Garland, Etta James, Quincy Jones, and others. After high school, she moved to Bridgeport to pursue her career in music. Gigs singing for other artists followed, and she eventually signed with the Stratford-based BSE label where she issued her 2009 self-titled debut. From the album came a handful of singles including "Bcuz I Luv U," and "4 the Lovers," both of which landed in the Top 40 of the Billboard R&B Airplay chart. A third single, "Here with Me," also fared well, nabbing Kane industry buzz after it was featured on the first season of VH1's Love & Hip Hop. Over the next few years, more of Kane's songs were featured on Love & Hip Hop, including "What Chilli Wants," "Single Ladies," "Disaster Date," and "Basketball Wives." Kane's sophomore album, Substance, arrived in 2012. It landed in the Top Ten on the digital charts. The album also continued her trajectory of getting songs placed on television with several tracks featured on VH1's Single Ladies 2. Also that year, her song "Make It," from her debut, was chosen as the theme song for the VH1 show Hollywood Exes. In 2014, she issued her third album, Thru the Veil, which included the single "It's There," with singer Brian McKnight. The Remix Album followed two years later and landed on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and Top 25 Dance chart. In 2017, she issued a single cover of Barbara Acklin's "Love Makes a Woman." A year later, she returned with another standalone single, "Chains." ~ Matt Collar
