Like most ’90s kids from India’s small towns, music director and background-score composer Anurag Saikia thought he would end up becoming a doctor or an engineer. It wasn’t until the early 2020s that Saikia, who has worked across Assamese and Hindi films and web series, finally admitted to himself that he was committed to a life in song.
Perhaps music was his destiny. After all, thanks to his mother, a professional folk singer, and his father, an ethnomusicologist with an extensive record collection, he grew up surrounded by music and was exposed to a variety of genres, taking in north-east Indian folk, Indian and Western classical music and film scores. He then dove deeper into Western styles as a student at the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music in Chennai, before returning to his roots and learning the ropes of the Assamese industry by assisting the singer Zubeen Garg.
Armed with the training to take on any style or scenario, commercial and critical acclaim soon followed through the hit Assamese pop album Tup Tup in 2009, and a National Film Award for the Assamese short Yugadrashta in 2013.
In 2011, Saikia moved from Guwahati to Mumbai and found his songwriting and scoring skills in demand. He went on to work with a wide range of directors and production houses such as Akarsh Khurana, Anubhav Sinha and The Viral Fever (TVF), becoming best known for the latter’s OTT dramedy Panchayat and the smash 2024 single “Ishq Hai” from the third season of the Khurana-directed romcom show Mismatched, for which he won Best Title Track at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA)’s Digital Awards in 2025.
Among the accomplishments Saikia holds closest to his heart, however, is Project Borgeet, his 2019 recordings of ancient Assamese devotional songs set to Western classical music and performed by an 85-piece orchestra from Macedonia and a choir from Shillong.
