Andrew Cyrille is a free jazz drummer/percussionist who emerged during the 1960s and is known for playing in free contexts, as evidenced by his 1969 debut, What About? Cyrille spent most of the '60s with Walt Dickerson and the '70s with Cecil Taylor. He has released over 80 albums, and amassed more than 350 recording credits. On 1993's The Human Factor, he teamed with pianist Borah Bergman. In 2011, he issued the seminal Route de Frères. His ECM leader debut, The Declaration of Musical Independence, with Ben Street, Bill Frisell, and Richard Teitelbaum, appeared in 2016. A trio effort, Lebroba, with the guitarist and Wadada Leo Smith, followed in 2018, as did the quartet's The Declaration of Musical Independence. Cyrille reconvened the group for 2021's The News. In 2023, he released the completely solo Music Delivery/Percussion on Intakt, and followed it in 2024 with Breaking the Shell with Frisell and Kit Downes.
Andrew Cyrille has also released music as a member of David Murray Power Quartet, The Mary Lou Williams Collective, The Cecil Taylor Quartet, Grachan Moncur III Octet, Charlie Haden & The Liberation Music Orchestra, Cecil Taylor Unit, Trio 3, David Murray Quartet, Andrew Cyrille Quartet, and Andrew Cyrille Quintet.
