After spending the greater part of a decade as members of the Bees, multi-instrumentalists Aaron Fletcher and Tim Parkin began working together as a duo under the name 77:78 in the late 2010s. On their 2018 debut album, Jellies, the duo's new band exhibited the same kind of skillful genre-hopping and stylistic alchemy that their previous one did, only with a more relaxed and summery feel.
When the Bees crawled to a halt in the early 2010s, Fletcher and Parkin decided to keep working together. They wrote and played as their schedules allowed over the course of a few years, taking a writing vacation to a barn in Dorset and workshopping half-formed ideas into songs. Once they had some completed, they started recording, utilizing the patient skills of their friends Jim and Rob Homes -- who are known professionally as Boe Weaver -- as producers at their studio on the Isle of Wight. The duo weren't sure what the end result of their efforts was going to be, but once Aaron DJ'd with Jeff Barrett of Heavenly Records and sent the intrigued label head some early tracks, they decided they were ready to start a band for real. Barrett liked what he heard and 77:78 signed a deal with Heavenly in 2016, then began working on their album in earnest.
The duo (plus a full band) played their first show in London at the beginning of 2018 and their debut single, "Love Said (Let's Go)," was released on a white-label 45 in February. The song created some healthy buzz and sold out in 48 hours. In June, they followed it with the peppy "Chilli" single, which had a remix by the Dubwood Allstars on the flip. The two singles showed that, despite their initial intention of trying to do something completely different, the duo were treading similar ground as the Bees, mixing vintage soul, gentle psychedelia, loose-limbed funk, and dub reggae into a warm and woody musical blend. 77:78's debut album, Jellies, followed soon after in July. ~ Tim Sendra
