Bouncy turns and dreamy depths guide the songs on Bean Magazine’s third EP. Led by singer/guitarist Henry Creamer, the Brisbane trio moves comfortably through varying shades of shoegaze and alt-rock, applying palpable pedal effects to alternately jangly and jagged melodies. So it’s only natural for psychedelic elements to creep in, whether it’s the hypnotic harmonies and evocative lyrics on “Share You” or the prickly reverb and distorted vocals on “Carly.” “The One in the Egg Dress” sneaks darker, noisier textures into the bridge, while “Ashamed That You Hate It” locates a nostalgic portal to 1990s-era slacker indie rock. As pleasant as the band often sounds, there’s some definite turbulence here: witness Creamer’s frayed, angsty delivery midway through opener “Chippy Fler,” and bassist Seb Baren and drummer Gabrielle Beiers’ anxious rhythmic drive during the culmination of “Free as Hell.” That all adds up to a burgeoning sense of exploration that bodes well for Bean Magazine’s future.
