Keeping up with Boldy James’ rapidly expanding output is a full-time job in and of itself. His 2025 collaboration with V Don, Alphabet Highway, is the fifth project of the year from the Detroit rapper, following a 2024 that included three new releases. This isn’t just a case of dropping music for the sake of it, though. Alphabet Highway confirms a generational heater from the smooth-talking street spitter, a snapshot of an artist firmly in his prime. On the mic, Boldy keeps things regular on the project, interspersing shit-talking brags with tales of his old days as a hustler. V Don cooks loops that are dusty and minimal, allowing plenty of room for the MC to paint landscapes of fancy cars, cash under the bed, and chains so heavy they strengthen neck muscles. On opener “Finishing Touches,” Boldy notes that after his opps listen to the project, “they gonna have to damn near scrap their whole catalog.” On “Day Light Savings,” James raps over a jazzy guitar melody and infuses his writing with evocative slices of life. He recalls “serving fiends that looked like Bob Hope,” always inclined to add a dash of humor to the trials and tribulations that inform this mountainous discography.
