Annahstasia
Tether
Album · Alternative · 2025
It’s fitting that the first noise on Annahstasia’s debut album is her voice. It’s operatic yet deft, like on opener “Be Kind,” where she dances around a lilting acoustic guitar melody that follows her voice like a shadow. Annahstasia signed her first major label deal as a 17-year-old, and while on Tether she opts to dwell in experimental-leaning folk music, her ability to pull melodies out of thin air explains why she was chosen to be a star as a teenager. “Slow,” which features Obongjayar, is a tender ballad bolstered by the duo’s stunning harmonic performance. “Overflow” finds Annahstasia dipping her toe into straight-ahead pop, allowing herself to embrace a more approachable format. There’s a freedom in her voice, though, as she comes to this place completely on her own terms.
