Kush Jones
Early Hours (DJ Mix)
Album · Dance · 2025
Early Hours can mean a few different things: Are you winding down after being up all night or just rising to meet the sun? New York City’s Kush Jones curated this month’s mix and chose to reflect his own morning process. “I take things slowly until I muster up the energy to start the day,” he tells Apple Music. “I [wanted] to give people a nice selection of music to wake up to.” The textures here—elastic synths, sticky drums, playful vocoder vocals—build gradually from groovier instrumentations (Kerri Chandler’s “In Search of Mr Ford”) to denser, heavier cuts from Skee Mask and Orlando Voorn. Among Jones’ favorites: “Werq Me” by DJ Delish, which he says has the energy to “keep the dance alive,” and the Detroit in Effect remix to Emerson’s “Sending All My Love Out,” which is “perfect for jams in Crotona Park,” a reference to the park in the Bronx. But it also works if you’re just cleaning after a long weekend, he says: “Tough drums, lush melodies, and a beautifully worded message.”
