Love You, Goodnight
Album · Country · 2025
Kolby Cooper found the overlap between country music and a seemingly disparate genre: grunge. Like contemporaries Cody Jinks and HARDY, the East Texas-born singer-songwriter incorporates heavier elements into his take on twang, and on this outing he also dips into sounds from melodic pop-rock and ’90s country radio. Cooper opens Love You, Goodnight with “Apt. 208,” an aching anthem with shades of 2000s crossover rock. “Fighting with God” is one of the album’s most compelling moments, with an unexpected chorus topline that recalls the acrobatic melodies of early Brooks & Dunn. “Hate You Too” is more power pop than grunge, though some screeching electric guitar beefs things up between verses. Songs like “One Big Happy Sad Family” and “Mama” show the softer side of Cooper’s lyric writing, and the title track, which closes the project, is as tender as it is atmospheric. Fellow Texan Danielle Bradbery joins Cooper on “One Last,” a tear-stained duet chronicling the final, painful days of a doomed relationship. Cooper co-wrote each of the album’s 14 tracks, with Andrew Baylis and Michael Whitworth tag-teaming production.
