Alfredo Olivas
"V1V0"
Album · Música Mexicana · 2025
Alfredo Olivas’ career has been an eventful one, but judging by the quality of his continuing work he deserves even more credit for what he’s accomplished creatively in just the past few years. Having successfully shifted away from a storied narcocorrido past towards a broader application of his skills to other música mexicana styles, he luxuriates in the breadth of his musical freedom throughout “V1V0”. Naturally, his supportive fanbase will already be familiar with a number of its songs, including previously released singles “Imaginación” and the vengeful “Noche De Enciclopedia.” At times, it may seem that tracks like “Así Se Usa En Los Ranchos” and “Perro De Carnicería” are too stylistically disparate to belong on the same project, yet Olivas’ formidable talents hold the diverse sounds together into a cohesive and oft compelling listen. “De Sobremanera,” a self-penned romantic song adorned with all manner of banda charm, comes in delightful contrast with the title track, the latter unafraid to deliver bold statements and darkly pensive digressions. Bucking the tumbados trends, Olivas addresses serious situations with a certain urgency, evident via the “in vino, veritas” revelations of “Borracha” and the measured responses of “Puede.” His rollicking “Qué Ganas” raises the tempo alongside the emotional stakes, while the Carlos Rivera duet “Tu Amor Es Mío” flits around various genre inspirations to enrich its declarations of an all-consuming, possessive love. That extends to the lascivious wit of “Asignatura Pendiente,” a novel form of pep talk to psych oneself up and overcome bedroom nervousness.
