Moonlight Variations

Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme is the main item in this recital by the Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández. His sprightly, rhythmically sharp interpretation makes an engagingly fresh impression, abetted by the agile, on-point contribution of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. Ferrández’s scampering runs in Variation 2 showcase his sparkling technical credentials, as does his flickering sleight of hand in the quicksilver Coda. But the more reflective Variations 3 and 6 unearth a deeply poetic vein in Ferrández’s playing. This poetic quality carries over into the clutch of shorter pieces for piano and cello which open the album. Of these, an arrangement of Schubert’s song “Nacht and Träume” highlights the soulful, singing quality Ferrández brings to quieter music. Works by Chopin, Debussy, Liszt, Schumann, and Dvořák also feature, including the latter’s ravishing “Song to the Moon.” Plus there’s a warmly affectionate take on Manuel Ponce’s winsome love song “Estrellita.” Julien Quentin’s piano accompaniments are unfailingly sympathetic.
