The life of the rap star is often glamorized: We hear stories of lavish parties, fast cars, copious amounts of booze and weed, all the ladies you can dream of. But Baby Smoove, the straight-talking realist who finds entertainment in life’s funny nuances, tells a different story entirely. On Flawless 2, which follows up the project’s first iteration, released in 2019, the Detroit rapper illuminates the mundane in neon. It’s the little things that tickle him most. On opener “Tight Shit,” Baby Smoove explains exactly how he spends his time: “I get high by myself and make money every day.” Rappers: they’re not so different from us after all. When Baby Smoove is at his best, though, he’s proving that the glitz and the glamor don’t amount to anything when faced with the realities that hit each of us. On “Tight Shit,” he succinctly explains why all the money in the world isn’t really worth a damn thing: “Shit, I put my grandma in a palace, now her memory fading away/Everybody problems mines, I’m the one who save the day.”
