Though Chicago drill music has undergone many iterations and has been co-opted by many rappers across many different cities, the sound’s singular style can still be traced back to the Chi. VonOff1700, who emerged in 2024 with #FreeMyHoodFuckYoHood, has dedicated his come-up to revitalizing the city’s grip on the rumbling style. His second offering of the year, #TurntUpNotBurntUp, is another all-gas, no-brakes drill exercise, a collection that showcases his powerful delivery and unique perspective within the Windy City hierarchy. On “First One,” which features YTB Fatt, VonOff spits over dizzying synths and bouncing low-end 808s. He raps about his street bona fides, reveling in his defiance and the street code he lives by: “N****s be telling the truth when they talking to 12, I be the first one lying.” Elsewhere, he links up with drill pioneers from two different eras, G Herbo and Polo G, on “Dead N****s.” On the track, VonOff makes a claim as the future of the subgenre, holding his own and making it clear that he’s not to be trifled with: “Disrespect us and this shit gonna get ugly/I stay with my mask, it'll go up in public.”
