Mia Wray
hi, it's nice to meet me

The incredible intimacy of Mia Wray’s debut album is clear from the opening title track. Detailing the discovery of her queer identity, the Queensland songwriter rejoices in finally coming face to face with her true self. A musically snappy co-write with G Flip and Aidan Hogg, the song exemplifies the autobiographical, lyric-driven pop that Wray does so well. That theme of personal affirmation recurs throughout the album, with “Get Out My Way” seeing her take up the reins of her own fate and “Not the Same as Yesterday” celebrating the best sex she’s ever had and waking up next to the love of her life. The strength of new love also powers “What If” and the clubby outlier “The Way She Moves,” on which Wray goes full disco diva. Several ballads recount the gradual journey of showing herself to the world at large (“Fake a Smile,” “Everybody Knows”), while Wray has described “Not Enough” as a proper gay-awakening anthem. “Even if it breaks my heart/I wanna hold your hand/Don’t wanna hide who I am,” she sings during the heartland-sized chorus, before driving it home with a handclapped breakdown.
